Pilates

Pilates is a preventative system of movement, which focuses on core strength and proper alignment. The exercises help build bone density, increase joint mobility and improve overall strength and flexibility of the body. Pilates is recognized as a key component of any rehabilitation program.

The pelvic floor is a term used to refer to the tissue that connects the pubic bone in the front of the pelvis to the coccyx in the back. They are skeletal muscles that are under our voluntary control and respond to the same training principles of exercise as any other muscle.

The pelvic floor muscles are the foundation for the core of the body. They help stabilize the pelvis, and they support the organs of the lower abdominal cavity, like the bladder and uterus. Pilate exercises focus on strengthening and engaging the pelvic floor muscles along with the deep muscles of the back and abdomen.

Childbirth, chronic coughing, aging, and inactivity are among the causes of weakened or damaged pelvic floor muscles. A weak pelvic floor can lead to problems like incontinence, an unstable pelvic area and/or joint impingement, diminished sexual enjoyment, and a dropping of the organs into the pelvic muscles. In addition, if the pelvic floor muscles are weak, structural imbalances can occur leading to abdominal and back pain.

Strength and Balance for Seniors

Strength and balance are essential components for independent living and a high quality of life. As strength and balance deteriorate due to injury, inactivity, or through the natural process of aging the risk for falling, injury, and decreased independence rises. Falls are a major cause of reduced functioning, injury and even death in many seniors, as well as premature nursing home admission in persons over 65. Furthermore, 95% of hip fractures are a result of minor falls. Luckily, impairments to strength and balance are not permanent. With the proper training, both of these vital systems can be improved in order to enhance activities of daily living and quality of life.

Our strength and balance class for seniors aims to improve overall body awareness, coordination, strength and balance in order to reduce the risk of falls and enhance physical functioning & mobility. As well as strength and balance exercises, fall prevention strategies will be discussed and recovery techniques will be practiced so if a fall does occur you or your loved one will not be left on the floor waiting for help. Sessions will be held in an interactive group based format led by a registered Physical Therapist. Easy and safe home exercise sheets will also be provided to aid in learning and progress. The strength and balance class for seniors is held once a week for 6 weeks.
